My name is Winnie L., Zumba and Pilates instructor with City Sports Club for almost two years now.

I was born in Hong Kong but grew up in Fremont, CA.  When I was in high school, I was on the tennis and badminton teams.

It wasn’t until about six years ago that I tried Zumba® for the first time. I was on a weight loss journey then and needed to lose some weight, so I just started taking all kinds of group exercise classes at the gym, as well as swimming. I never even danced before I tried Zumba®.

I found it really fun and a good form of cardio that I needed. It was also very emotionally uplifting for me to learn and do all those dance routines. I had thoughts then how awesome it would be if someday I could lead a Zumba® class. I went from not being able to last one class to being able to do three fitness classes back to back!

I am a firm believer that in fitness, as in anything else, you are able to achieve so much more than your brain would have you believe. Sometimes the biggest obstacle is our lack of faith in ourselves.

About two years ago, I got certified as a Zumba® instructor and was hired by City Sports Club to teach in the Hayward area locations. I started subbing for other clubs as well because I felt like I could get myself up to speed as an instructor if I have to teach in front of different audiences and in different environments. It was a good call. I met a lot of good friends and students along the way, and every time I go to each location I feel like I am visiting old friends.

I am happy to be able to inspire students to push themselves further than they think they ever could. Some students tell me that their blood sugar level was lowered as a result of coming to my classes and that they are now more flexible than ever before.

Body trainers and weight lifters come to my Pilates class to train their own core and flexibility! I am super delighted to hear all those comments and if I am in some way able to help them improve their lives or make a difference in their fitness journey, that is the greatest reward that I look forward to when teaching my classes.
